RSU Biology Club Community Involvement and Events

RSU Biology Club Attends 2014 Destination RSU

Rogers State University Biology Club was in attendance at the 2014 Destination RSU event held on November 8, 2014 at the RSU Claremore campus Centennial Center.  This annual event is a chance for high school seniors, juniors, and parents to meet RSU students and faculty, learn about degree plans and student organizations, and take a tour of the RSU Claremore campus.  The RSU Biology Club met many students who were interested in biology and informed these potential students about opportunities provided at RSU and how RSU values community involvement.  Unique qualities that help make RSU so special is the excellent support students receive from faculty and staff and field studies completed in science classes.  RSU's President, Dr. Larry Rice, further identified some of the unique qualities of RSU, including the 120 acre on-site Conservation Education Reserve that is available to students for hands on learning, a run on one of the many trails, or just a quiet place to study and enjoy the great outdoors.  The RSU Biology Club table featured Mrs. Glass' Ball Python, Buffy.  Many attendants enjoyed the opportunity to observe the python up close, and some brave individuals even held the beautiful python.  The RSU Biology Club was voted best table and will be treated to donuts, graciously provided by Daylight Doughnuts in Claremore, OK, at their next meeting.  Go Hillcats!

RSU Biology Club Takes Part in 11th Annual Kiddie Karnival

The annual Halloween fun and celebration festivities kicked off on the evening of Friday, October 24, 2014, with the 11th annual Kiddie Karnival.  The carnival is sponsored by RSU Student Government Association and was held at the Claremore Recreation Center.  RSU clubs and organizations were invited to host a booth at this event.  The fun and games were followed by the movie, "The Haunted Mansion", hosted by the City of Claremore.

The RSU Biology Club was in presence, in addition to several other organizations.  Creative members of the RSU Biology Club constructed a life size version of the popular game, "Operation"  The patient, portrayed as a skeleton, consisted of inventively fashioned human anatomy parts that included eyes, brain, heart, lung, stomach, kidney, flanges, femur, and nervous system.  The bones and organs portrayed realistic qualities.  The heart, constructed of balloons, contained four ventricles.  Game participants were quizzed on their human anatomy knowledge by having to identify where on the skeleton the part should be found.  Once participants answered correctly, a flap was raised, where the participants had the opportunity to see and feel human anatomy part models.  The RSU Biology Club students had a great time testing the kids knowledge of human anatomy; as well as, handing out candy, prizes, and anatomy coloring sheets.  The kids had a great time trying to determine and identify the correct human anatomy parts and were provided an opportunity to gain scientific experience.  One enthusiastic participant, in a soccer player costume, after playing the game one time, took a coloring sheet to "study" and returned, determined to identify all of the human anatomy pieces correctly!  Perhaps the clubs enthusiasm and knowledge will inspire children of the local community to learn more, and maybe even one day, attend RSU to become aspiring scientists!

RSU Biology Club Initiates Conservation Education Reserve Project

Members of the Rogers State University Biology Club have initiated a research project focusing on the Conservation Education Reserve at RSU.  The purpose of this project is to learn about features, wildlife, and natural resources at the reserve, increase community awareness of projects being completed at the reserve, and assess and document how the reserve is used.  Biology Club Members were on site at the reserve on October 13, 2014.

The attainment of photographs and information about the reserve will be part of a continual project.  To assess how the reserve is used, the RSU Biology Club has established a blog, atreasuretokeep.blogspot.com.  Members of the public community are encouraged to visit the Conservation Education Reserve blog and share personal experiences.  A photographic collection of pictures taken at the reserve may be found on flickr by clicking this link.

RSU Biology Club Attends Student Organization Day at RSU Pryor Campus

The RSU Biology Club was in attendance at the Student Organization Day held on the Rogers State University Pryor campus on October 9, 2014.  This event allowed RSU Claremore campus student organizations the opportunity to reach out and meet Pryor campus students.  RSU currently has over 30 student organizations.  The RSU Biology Club met several interested individuals and had five Pryor campus students sign up for the Biology Club!  The Biology Club looks forward to meeting these new members, and working together as they continue to be involved within the community and create interest in biology. Welcome RSU Pryor Biology Club Students!
